About the program
About Conquering Compulsivity:
The Conquering Compulsions program is a great opportunity to get your mind and body in shape and get on top of unhelpful habits. A ‘compulsion’ is a bit like a strong habit. It’s something we do again and again, and have trouble not doing even though it’s not helping us. Lots of people have compulsive behaviours, as many as 80% of us. This research program is focusing on mild everyday kind of compulsions, and investigating whether exercising regularly and reducing our stress levels can change activity in brain circuits that drive compulsions, and reduce how often we feel the need to engage in them.
Who can join?
We’re looking for volunteers who:
• are aged 18 - 40 years
• want to take part in an 8-week exercise and stress management training program
• have access to a smart phone or tablet
• have a compulsion, or strong habit, they’d like to reduce in one or more of the following areas:
- drinking alcohol
- washing or cleaning
- ordering or arranging objects
Participation will involve:
• commitment to the 8-week exercise and stress-management program
• completing questionnaires and cognitive activities
• completing 2-3 fitness tests
• having 2-3 MRI brain scans
• providing occasional saliva samples
To find out if this is the right study for you, we need to ask a few questions about your lifestyle and habits. Your answers are strictly confidential and you will not be asked to provide your name or any identifying information until the end.
The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
